Do Not Be Afraid

Faith Over Fear: Trusting God in the Unknown

Life often presents us with moments that challenge our faith, pushing us to confront fears that feel larger than life. But what if those fears aren't as formidable as they seem? When we trust God and face the unknown, we often discover His protection and peace have been with us all along. As Steven Furtick says, "Some of us write stories about our future that we haven’t experienced yet and narrate them with fear, not faith."

This mindset resonates deeply. How many of us, when facing uncertain situations, begin to imagine worst-case scenarios and let fear dictate the narrative? But what if, instead, we chose faith?

Biblical Examples of Facing the Unknown

The Bible is full of stories of people stepping into the unknown, guided by faith rather than fear. Rahab, Gideon, David, Samuel, and the prophets all resisted public opinion, followed God's calling, and trusted Him amidst uncertainty. Joseph’s story, especially, offers profound lessons on trusting God’s guidance.

When an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Do not be afraid," it set the tone for his journey of obedience. Joseph’s life didn’t lack challenges—he faced danger, uncertainty, and constant change. Yet he consistently chose to trust God's plans. Through four distinct dreams, God guided Joseph to protect Mary and Jesus, ultimately preserving the Savior of the world.

These dreams weren't just one-time instructions. They demonstrated that God's guidance unfolds step by step as we walk in obedience. Joseph’s story reminds us that God doesn’t abandon us after our first “yes.” Instead, He continues to guide, protect, and provide.

Living for an Audience of One

In life, we often let the opinions of others influence our decisions. What would it look like to live for an audience of one—God? Imagine the freedom that comes from releasing the need to please others or second-guessing ourselves based on their reactions. Joseph lived this way, and it allowed him to trust God fully, even when the path was unclear.

Faith in the Face of Fear

Fear of the unknown is one of the most common human struggles. It often drives us to seek control or shut down altogether. But what if uncertainty isn’t something to be feared? What if it’s an invitation to draw closer to God?

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Even in detours, disappointments, and uncertainties, God's plans are good. Fear may tempt us to take control or demand immediate answers, but faith invites us to trust in God's timing and His unwavering love.

A Personal Testimony of Freedom

I’ve walked this journey myself. As a teenager, I struggled with crippling anxiety and fear, including panic attacks and PTSD. For years, fear consumed me, despite therapy and medication. While these tools were helpful, they didn’t address the root of my fear.

It wasn’t until I fully surrendered to God’s love that I experienced freedom. His love anchored me in moments of uncertainty, reminding me that I could choose faith over fear. This transformation didn’t come from having all the answers but from trusting the One who does.

Faith in the Everyday Unknown

Joseph’s story reminds us that faith isn’t about one grand decision but a daily commitment to trust God. Each “yes” leads to the next step, even when the full path isn’t visible. In the same way, our faith grows as we continually choose to trust God over fear in the small, everyday uncertainties.

Perhaps you’re facing a job transition, a decision about education, or a significant life change. Maybe fear whispers lies about failure, rejection, or disappointment. Remember that God doesn’t expect you to have all the answers. He asks you to trust Him—because He has the answers.

When we live for an audience of One, our decisions are no longer tethered to the opinions of others. Instead, they flow from a deep trust in God's purpose for us. His voice becomes louder than the voice of fear, guiding us with clarity and peace.

Trusting the Author of Your Story

One of the greatest acts of faith is relinquishing control of our future story. Instead of imagining worst-case scenarios, we can trust the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). He writes stories filled with redemption, grace, and purpose.

Faith allows us to embrace uncertainty, knowing that God is with us in every twist and turn. Like Joseph, we may not see the entire plan at once, but we can trust that God’s guidance will come exactly when we need it.

An Exercise in Faith Over Fear

Here’s a practical way to begin applying this in your life. Identify one area where fear is holding you back. Write it down. Pray over it, asking God to replace fear with faith. Then, take a small step of obedience, trusting Him to lead you.

For example:

  • If you’re afraid of a career change, research opportunities and pray for wisdom.

  • If fear of failure holds you back from pursuing a calling, take one small step toward it.

  • If you struggle with anxiety about the unknown, spend time daily in God’s Word, seeking His promises and truth.

The Power of God’s Love

1 John 4:18 declares, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." This love is available to you. It’s a love that heals, restores and emboldens. God’s love doesn’t just manage fear; it eradicates it, offering peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).

When fear tries to grip your heart, remind yourself of His love. Remember that God doesn’t call you to navigate the unknown alone. He goes before you, walks beside you, and watches over you.

A Final Challenge

What would your life look like if you fully trusted God with your fears? Imagine the freedom, the peace, and the opportunities that could unfold. Choose today to live for an audience of One, letting His love and guidance shape your future.

Take heart: The unknown is not a place of fear but a space for faith to flourish. Trust the God who knows what’s ahead and leads you with love.

An Invitation to Surrender

Today, consider the areas of your life where fear has taken hold. What parts of your story need to be rewritten with faith instead of fear? Maybe it’s your career, relationships, or future plans. Whatever it is, God is calling you to trust Him.

In Isaiah 55:6, we’re reminded to "seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while He is near." When we surrender our fears to Him, we open the door to His guidance and peace.

Prayer
Father God, we surrender our fears and uncertainties to You. Fill us with Your unchanging, life-giving love. Help us trust in Your plans, even when we don’t see the way ahead. Give us boldness to step out in faith, knowing You are with us every step of the journey. Amen
